About Justin French
Nerdy Stuff
I’m thirty-something graphic-designer-turned-web-application-developer with a special interest in combining cutting edge technology with a solid design process to build great software and great user experiences.
Some of the many things I like:
- finding ways to make things work better
- clarifying and simplifying
- understanding how you understand things
- building great software
- building maintainable (no, really) HTML & CSS frameworks for large scale web applications
- helping businesses recover from a mess of unmaintainable front-end code
- small, incremental, measurable improvements
- offering a fresh perspective and a fresh set of eyes
- building high-performance, world-class software teams
- agile, iterative businesses
- customer-centered problem solving
You may recognise me as the author of the extraordinarily popular Formtastic plugin for the Ruby on Rails framework, among many other open source projects hosted on Github.
Other Stuff
I’m married to an incredible wife, father to @baby_french, a workaholic, a non-dancer, the proud owner of a wonderful coffee machine, vaguely interested in Twitter, a fan of home made pizza, a lover of microbreweries…
Work Stuff
I currently work with NZX (the New Zealand Stock Exchange), who recently acquired Clear, a Melbourne start-up I joined as a user experience and interface designer (with a 5 month stint as interim CTO).
Prior to Clear I helped shape RedBubble.com, yet another successful Melbourne start-up.
RedBubble lured me away from Joyent, an incredibly successful San Francisco based cloud computing company which acquired TextDrive, a popular web hosting company in which I signed on as the first full-time employee with two servers and a few hundred loyal customers.
I love working for start-ups, and I love helping them find passionate customers and build something remarkable.
